Walk into almost any factory, warehouse, or industrial facility in India after dark — or imagine a sudden power cut — and you immediately understand the value of something most businesses treat as optional: glow in the dark labels.

At Smish Industries in Pune, we manufacture photoluminescent (glow in the dark) labels for factories, commercial buildings, electrical panels, and safety equipment manufacturers across Maharashtra and India. And in our experience, this is one of the most underutilised safety products in the Indian manufacturing sector.

Here's a deep-dive into why that needs to change — and what to look for when you buy.

WHAT ARE GLOW IN THE DARK LABELS, EXACTLY?

Photoluminescent or glow in the dark labels are made with a special pigment — usually strontium aluminate — that absorbs ambient light (natural or artificial) during the day and re-emits it as a green or blue glow in darkness. They don't need batteries, electricity, or any external power source.

Think of them as passive emergency signage that is always 'on' the moment the lights go out.

WHERE ARE THEY USED IN INDUSTRY?

The applications are broader than most people realise:

  1. Emergency Exit Signs and Directional Arrows — Required under the National Building Code and factory safety standards. When power fails during a fire or emergency, these labels guide workers to exits even through smoke.
  2. Electrical Panel Labels — Identifying isolators, circuit breakers, and emergency shutoffs in the dark can be critical during an electrical fault. Glow labels on panel doors and switches make these visible instantly.
  3. Fire Safety Equipment — Fire extinguisher location markers, hose reel indicators, and sprinkler shutoff labels all benefit enormously from photoluminescent marking.
  4. Hazardous Area Warnings — Chemical storage areas, high-voltage zones, and confined spaces often need 24/7 visible warnings. Glow labels ensure visibility even when area lighting fails.
  5. Automotive and Machinery — Dashboard controls, safety handles, emergency stops, and warning labels on vehicles and heavy machinery can be made glow-in-the-dark for low-light operation.
  6. Stairs, Walkways, and Ramps — Step-edge markings and floor level indicators in warehouses and multi-storey factories prevent fall accidents during power outages.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD GLOW IN THE DARK LABEL?

Not all photoluminescent labels are equal. Here is what separates a quality label from a cheap one:

Glow Duration: Premium strontium aluminate pigments glow for 8–12 hours after charging. Low-quality zinc sulphide pigments lose their glow within 30–60 minutes. Always ask your supplier which pigment they use.

Substrate Material: The base material should be rigid enough to stay flat and legible over time. We use high-quality PVC and polycarbonate substrates that resist yellowing, warping, and peeling even in industrial environments.

Print Clarity: The safety text, symbols, and directional arrows printed on glow labels must remain sharp and readable even when the glow is active. Poor print quality makes labels illegible in the dark — defeating the entire purpose.

Adhesive Strength: Industrial environments involve vibration, temperature extremes, moisture, and chemical exposure. The adhesive must hold firmly on metal panels, concrete walls, wooden doors, and glass surfaces without lifting at the edges.

WHAT DO INDIAN SAFETY REGULATIONS SAY?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has guidelines for photoluminescent safety markings under IS 15484, and the National Building Code 2016 specifically recommends photoluminescent exit route marking for commercial and industrial buildings. Many companies are not yet compliant — and factory inspections are becoming stricter.

Investing in proper glow in the dark safety labels is not just a best practice — it is increasingly a compliance requirement.
